Dear Friend,
As President Obama made clear in his primetime address to the nation last night, the need for health care reform is indisputably urgent.
Powerful special interests are still playing politics with the health of our working families, while millions of Coloradans -- like so many Americans -- are suffering as premiums, deductibles, and out-of-pocket expenses skyrocket. We have led historic efforts here in Colorado to expand coverage and reduce costs, but we must take swift action to tackle the root of the problem: America's broken health care system.
Proponents of the status quo see killing health care reform as a way to score political points. But in reality they are killing the competitiveness of American businesses, and killing the American Dream for working families. That's why it was important for President Obama to remind Congress last night that "This debate is not a game for these Americans, and they can't afford to wait any longer for reform."
We must show Congress that Colorado families demand comprehensive health care reform now. We will accept nothing less.
Please join me in supporting President Obama on health care. Tell your members of Congress to stand up to the special interests and fix America's broken health care system now!
America's battered economy will not fully recover until Congress acts to reform health care. Now more than ever, Colorado's families and businesses cannot stand by and wait as Washington politicians bicker about whether our system is really broken or whether reform is really necessary.
When family budgets are stretched to the limit by the reality of soaring health care costs, America's health care system is broken.
When 47 million Americans lack health insurance -- including nearly a million here in Colorado -- America's health care system is broken.
When a hard-working American loses access to health coverage the moment he or she loses a job, America's health care system is broken.
When an insurance company can deny coverage based on pre-existing conditions, America's health care system is broken.
Meaningful reform will require innovative ideas that keep coverage costs affordable and insurance companies honest. It must bring more competition to the market and give Americans more choice, which is why I support President Obama's call for the inclusion of a public option.
Join me in urging our Congressional representatives to set aside their differences and get behind President Obama's plan now, including his call for a public option.
It is time to dismiss the cynics and come together to solve this national challenge together. If we make our voices heard in the halls of Congress, we have a real chance at bringing about the kind of change we so desperately need.
Thank you,

Bill Ritter, Jr.
Governor
